Day 1: Qualifing round sees home shuttlers prevail

(Changzhou, September 15) The qualiying round of the 2009 LI LING China Masters Super Series ended this afternoon in Changzhou, with Chinese shuttlers booking all the eight tickets on offer for tomorrow's first round.

On the men's side, Chinese Liu Jingru advanced directly after being a bye in both rounds today, while Li Yu enjoyed another bye in the second match after edging compatriot Tian Houwei 2-1. Zhang Sheng was the only one who had to play two hard-fought matches before qualifying for the competition proper.

Tomorrow morning, Liu Jingru will be pitted against Danish veteran Joachim Persson, while Li Yu will take on Yu Hsin Hsieh (TPE). Zhang Sheng and Wang Zhengming's opponents will be Wan Ho Shon and Sung Hwan Park, both from Korea.

On the women's side, Han Li whitewashed her Japanese counterpart Yuka Kusunose 2-0 and directly entered the tournament with a bye in the second round. Li Xuerui also played one match, but it took three games before she beat teammate Xia Jingyun. Zhang Yuchun had a tough time outplaying teammates Chen Xiaojia and Liu Jie, both by a narrow margin of 2-1. Another Chinese Liu Xin also entered the next round after winning Li Li (SIN) and Fu Shanshan (CHN) respectively.

In the first round of the women's singles tomorrow, Han Li and Li Xuerui will play against teammates Wang Shixian and Wang Xin respectively; while Zhang will face the challenge from ace player Tine Rasmussen of Denmark, and Liu Xin will test her skills with Ayaka Takahashi from Japan.
